Galamsey: 400 more soldiers deployed to protect Pra River

The soldiers are to protect the tributaries of the Pra River which have been significantly affected by the activities of illegal miners

Government has deployed additional 400 soldiers in a bid to boost the fight against illegal mining on water bodies across the country.

A statement issued and signed by the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, said the move  forms part of phase two of the exercise which began a week ago.

“The Ghana Armed Forces have commenced a second phase of Operation Halt II aimed at removing all persons and logistics involved in mining on water bodies. The new phase of the operation focuses on the tributaries of the Pra river which have also been significantly affected by the activities of illegal miners,” the statement said.

The statement added: “The Ghana Armed Forces have also commenced armed patrols of the Pra river itself. The operation is being undertaken by four hundred (400) men… The public is advised to stay away from mining in water bodies to avoid any action by the force.”
