US ELECTIONS: Government agency tasked with transition process recognises Biden’s victory

US General Services Administration has formally written to President-Elect Joseph Biden, acknowledging his election as the 46th President

The United States (US) government agency tasked to execute presidential transitions, the US General Services Administration (GSA), has formally written to the President-Elect of the United States of America, Joseph Biden, acknowledging his election as the 46th President of the United States and to kick-start the transition process between now and when he together with Vice President – Elect, Kamala Harris, will take office on the 20th of January 2021.

In a letter dated the 8th of November 2020 and addressed to the “Honourable Joseph R. Biden, Jr., President-Elect of the United States”, the Administrator of the General Services Administration, Emily Murphy, said she was “very pleased to inform the President – Elect that pursuant to the Presidential Transition Act of 1963, as amended, 3 U.S.C. 102 note (the Act)”, that they are the successful candidates in the just ended 2020 elections.

“I have ascertained that you and Senator Kamala D. Harris, are the apparent successful candidates for the offices of President and Vice President respectively, and that you are therefore the President-Elect and Vice President-Elect for purposes of the Act” the GAS Administrator said.

“Consequently pursuant to section 3 of the Act, you are entitled, upon request, to receive necessary services and facilities for use in connection with preparations for the assumption of your official duties as President and Vice President” the Statement added.

The GAS Administrator further in her statement indicated that “together with the members of the GSA Presidential Transition Support Team”, they “look forward to supporting the President and Vice President Elect, during this transition period and throughout their administration”.

“We are committed to providing you with superior workplaces, quality acquisition services, expert business solutions and responsible asset management” the GAS administrator noted.

Outgoing US President, Donald Trump and his administration has so far refused to accept the election of Joseph Biden and Kamala Harris and to sign off on a key document needed to formally begin the transition process while he continues to baselessly claim election fraud and refuses to concede the race.

According to reports on multiple news portals in the United States, back in early September 2020, the Trump administration agreed to three documents, memoranda of understanding, with the Biden transition team, as laid out by the Presidential Transition Act.

They were signed by the General Services Administration, the Department of Justice, and White House chief of staff Mark Meadows. At the time $9.62 million was allocated to the Biden transition team for pre-election services, which the team continues to receive.

Once Murphy has made the decision on a successful election winner, that has triggered the release of an additional $9.9 million in funds for post-election services, which includes $6.3 million for the incoming administration, $1 million for appointee orientation and training, and $2.6 million for outgoing services.

Among the items outlined in those MOUs, were an agreement for the Trump administration to provide the Biden transition with office space, communications services, payment or reimbursement for certain activities, staff payroll, travel for the President-elect, expedited security clearance processes for national security nominees, and secure, compartmented national security briefings. Emily Murphy, the Administrator of the was nominated by Trump in 2017 and unanimously confirmed.
