The International Day of Education was marked with a strong call to students to embrace the opportunities of Artificial Intelligence (AI) while remaining mindful of its challenges.
The event, held at the University of Ghana on 24 January 2025, was themed “Artificial Intelligence: Challenges and Opportunities” and coincided with the launch of the United Community Education Foundation (UCEF), a youth-led organisation dedicated to empowering young people through education and health advocacy.
Addressing the gathering, Priscilla Commey Mintah, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Education and Leadership at the University of Ghana, urged students to adopt a balanced approach toward AI.

“As students, you must take responsibility for managing the knowledge bestowed upon you by God. Leverage AI to enhance your understanding of challenging subjects, but rely on your innate knowledge too,” she advised.
Mintah further highlighted the importance of preserving cultural values amidst technological advancements, stating, “We must not sacrifice our cultural elements for the sake of AI. Let us pursue knowledge with determination, integrating the human touch into our use of technology.”
Adding to the conversation, Abib Duut, a computational scientist at The Francis Crick Institute in London, noted Africa’s potential as a hub for technological innovations.

“As a growing economy, Africa is poised to use Artificial Intelligence to revolutionise agriculture, education, and other sectors. AI offers limitless opportunities to create jobs and drive development,” he emphasised.
The event also spotlighted the newly launched UCEF, whose founder, Fauzia Duut, outlined the organisation’s mission to support young people in areas such as sexual reproductive health rights, education, and general well-being. “Through initiatives like the ‘Start Right Campaign,’ we aim to comprehensively educate young people on sexual reproductive health care services and empower them to participate in decision-making processes,” Ms. Duut explained.
Before its official launch, UCEF had already made strides in assisting students, offering personalised psychological support to boost self-esteem and academic performance. The foundation also provided financial assistance for tuition and examination fees, ensuring uninterrupted access to education.
The event underscored the importance of equipping young people to navigate emerging technologies like AI while fostering their holistic development through education and empowerment initiatives.
