Interior Minister announces extra holiday as Eid-ul-Fitr falls on weekend

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has announced that Monday, 23 March 2026, will be observed as an additional public holiday nationwide.

In a statement issued on Friday, the ministry said Friday, 20 March and Saturday, 21 March 2026, mark Eid-ul-Fitr and Shaqq Day, both recognised as statutory public holidays in Ghana.

However, because March 21 falls on a Saturday, the government has declared Monday, March 23 as an additional public holiday to be observed across the country.

The declaration was made by the President of the Republic, John Dramani Mahama, through an Executive Instrument in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, as amended.

The Interior Ministry urged the public, institutions, and businesses to take note of the additional holiday and observe it accordingly.

Eid-Ul-Fitr is celebrated by Muslims worldwide to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan, while Shaqq Day is traditionally recognised in Ghana’s public holiday calendar alongside the festival.

The announcement means that workers across the country will observe the additional holiday on Monday, creating a long weekend for the celebrations.
