President Akufo-Addo cut the sod yesterday (Monday 26 October 2020) for the start of work on the 64-kilometre Ashaiman-Akosombo road dualisation project.

The road project, which will cost €256 million, will be completed in 30 months and is being realised by INZAG GmbH of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The project involves the construction of a two-lane dual carriageway and two-lane service road between Ashaiman and Sebrepor.

In addition, there will be a two-lane dual carriageway from Sebrepor to Afienya, a two-lane dual carriageway from Afienya to Kpong, and a two-lane single carriageway from Kpong to Atimpoku.

The contractor also informed President Akufo-Addo that there will be three bridges, a flyover at Ashaiman and an interchange at Asutsuare. Eleven footbridges will be built and sited at various locations along the Ashaiman-Akosombo road.

The president also inspected project work on the 26.6-kilometre Accra-Tema road, which will cost an estimated US$100 million. The project is expected to be completed in 24 months. It is being undertaken by Messrs Gansu International Corporation and Messrs China Major Bridge Engineering Company Ltd.

The first lot of 16 kilometres starts from the Independence Arch and runs to Nungua; the second lot of 10.6 kilometres continues from Nungua and terminates in Tema Community 3. There will also be a three-tier interchange at the Nungua Barrier to address the frequent congestion problems suffered by road users at this location.
