By paying E-Levy, you support small businesses, says GRA

According to a tweet by GRA on Tuesday(26 April) “By paying E-Levy, you support small businesses. Your taxes work for you. Pay your taxes. Let’s build Ghana together.”

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has said the payment of the E-Levy would go a long way to help small businesses in the country.

In preparation for the the implementation of the E-Levy, the GRA in a tweet said: “By paying E-Levy, you support small businesses…”

Meanwhile, the GRA has served notice that following the passage of the Electronic Transfer Act 2022 (Act 1075), the authority will begin the implementation of the E-Levy on 1 May 2022.

The 1.50% levy will be charged on electronic transfers at the time of transfers.

Transactions E-Levy will cover:

  • Mobile money transfers between accounts on the same electronic money issuer (EMI)
  • Mobile money transfers from an account on one EMI to a recipient on another EMI
  • Transfers from bank accounts to mobile money accounts
  • Transfer from mobile money accounts to bank accounts
  • Bank transfers on a digital platform or application which originate from a bank account belonging to an individual to another individual

“No quorum”

Three National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament have applied for an interlocutory injunction at the Supreme Court to restrain the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) from implementing the E-Levy on 1 May 2022.

The three MPs are the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, the MP for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, and the MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

The NDC MPs have sued the Attorney General, arguing that Parliament did not have the required number of at least half of its members present when the E-Levy was approved.

On 29 March 2022, Parliament passed the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) by a vote of MPs from the Majority Caucus of the House after the Minority staged a walkout.
