India-Ghana ties upgraded to comprehensive partnership as Modi addresses Ghana’s Parliament
Modi emphasised the deep-rooted bonds between the two democracies, invoking the legacy of Dr Kwame Nkrumah and India’s role in Africa’s development

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a significant elevation in bilateral relations between India and Ghana during a landmark address to Ghana’s Parliament, declaring that both nations have agreed to a “comprehensive partnership”.
Addressing parliament on Thursday (3 July) during his 2-day visit to Ghana, Modi emphasised the deep-rooted bonds between the two democracies, invoking the legacy of Dr Kwame Nkrumah and India’s role in Africa’s development.
“Our friendship is sweeter than your famous sugarloaf pineapple,” Modi said to applause, drawing symbolism from Ghana’s famed hospitality and India’s cultural openness.
Key highlights of the partnership include:
-
Expanded economic cooperation in trade, tech, and infrastructure
-
Joint commitment to democratic values and institution building
-
Continued support for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)
Modi praised Ghana’s democratic journey, calling the country “a beacon of inspiration” and pledged that India would walk “shoulder to shoulder” with Ghana in its development pursuits.
