GPRTU: We demand removal of Price Stabilisation and Recovery Levy

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) says it wants the government to permanently remove the price stabilisation and recovery levies from the price build-up on petroleum products.

On 11 October 2021, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) approved the removal of the Price Stabilisation and Recovery Levy (PRSL) on petrol, diesel, and LPG for two months.

The removal follows the government’s intervention to mitigate the impact of rising prices of petroleum products on the world market on consumers.

However, speaking to Emmanuel Aboagye-Wiafe on Energy 101 (6 December) on the back of strike action by commercial drivers over the high prices of fuel in the country, Sylvester Amoah, communications team member of GPRTU said the two-months suspension of the levy is not enough hence the need for the government to abolish the levies completely.

He stated that “when it comes to the removal of petroleum taxes, we pointed at the debt recovery levy, sanitation and pollution levy, price stabilization levy and then also we made mention of the BOST margin.

“With the price stabilization and recovery levy, it was suspended for two months and after the two months what happens again? It comes back. So, we want permanent removal of the levy. Not suspending it for two months and later you bring it back,” he stated. 

The purpose of the Price Stabilisation and Recovery Levy (PSRL) is to stabilise prices for consumers and pay for the subsidies on Premix Fuel and Residual Fuel Oil (RFO).

However, in recent times, the government has come under severe criticisms over the continuous increment of fuel prices.
