I earn GHC1,500 from royalties annually, says Adane Best

Gospel artists Cwesi Oteng and Akesse Brempong have also lamented over their inability to access royalties from GHAMRO

Veteran highlife musician, Joseph Amoah, also known as Adane Best, has revealed that he earns GHC1,500 annually in terms of royalties after being in the music industry for over three decades.

Gospel artists Cwesi Oteng and Akesse Brempong have also lamented over their inability to access royalties from GHAMRO.

Akesse Brempong last year revealed that he had never received any money in terms of royalties from GHAMRO since joining the organisation five years ago.

GHAMRO was established under Section 49 of the Copyright Law of 2005 and mandated with the collection and distribution of royalties on behalf of authors, composers and other rightsholders.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (6 December) the Sisi Mame hit maker said he currently earns more from his performance both locally and abroad.

“I don’t want to talk about that, on average in a year, I earn about GHC1500, that is why I said I didn’t want to talk about it,” the veteran musician said.

“I have been performing here and there week in week out, this weekend I performed in Switzerland and people were there, it was a free show and I had my money,” he added.

About Adane Best

Adane Best is one of the most original and unique musicians in contemporary Ghana. His talent is so rich and obvious that his siblings Daniel Frimpong, Ken Amoah, and Victoria Amoah vowed never to allow it to go to waste; something that rarely happens in Ghana.

As providence has it, his first album, “Ayitey” became an instant hit and 7 albums later, he is still at it. His albums including Se Wu Bre, Wa nu Pe Asem, Rabbi, Maafio, Soja Go Soja Come, Ayekoo and Mamamia have all enjoyed a lot of airplay. His last album, ‘Adesa’, won the Best Highlife Album of 2008 at the Ghana Music Awards.

His fans often wonder why his songs are mostly in Ga, though he is Akan. The answer is simple. Adane Best was born at Adedenkpo near Palladium in Accra where his parents Christiana Ama Sarfowaa from Kwahu and Macauley Amoah from Agona Kwameng lived.

He started his schooling at the Teacher Afio Kindergarten, then to Amamomo 1 Primary School and Amamomo 1 and II mixed middle school, both at Timber Market in Accra.

After successfully completing middle school, he gained admission into the Otublohum Secondary School in 1986 and later moved to Osu Presbyterian Secondary School in 1987. He only got to form three and had to abandon school due to financial problems. It was during this time that started singing.

In 1992, his siblings teamed up and supported him to record his first album “Ayitey”. The song was composed of the experiences of his brother who traveled to Nigeria for greener pastures but was deported back to Ghana.

Adane Best’s music is inspired by other African artists like Youssou Ndour and Salif Keita.

He has also won an EGRAG Award for Best Dance Music in 1994, the Ghana Music Award for Best Highlife Song in 2003, and a recent award by the Kwahuman Traditional Council in conjunction with the Kwahu Youngsters Club.

He is single and has a set of twins of the opposite sex. He likes boxing, songwriting, football, and listening to foreign African music.
