Audio report: Tinga community appeals for investment in rock mining

In Ghana, gold mining has always been associated with the southern areas, particularly Tarkwa in the Western Region, Obuasi in the Ashanti Region, and other places.

However, there is gold in the northern region of the country as Asaase 99.5 Accra’s Nana Adjoa Entsuah-Hagan reports from the gold mining community of Tinga.

According to Kwame Sarfo, the chairman of the local mining committee, the group is looking for reputable financiers who are prepared to contribute to rock mining for the good of the whole neighborhood.

“This town has been a mining town since the 80s,” Sarfo said. “Because we deal in rocks those in the south are not interested in us, they are interested in alluvial mining. You know alluvial mining is the cheapest way but the underground one is very difficult, you can put more money into it and still run at a loss, that’s why people don’t want to come here,” he said.

He added: “Some investors came here to visit the site, but we don’t know if they are coming back anytime soon. The investors come but when they see that it is rock, they go back. The Burkinabe are helping us, they are putting the money into it. The one thing is that we don’t want any Chinese here. They come but we don’t want them.

“We don’t want them because they are very smart. They will capture all the land and drive us away.”
