Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a former flagbearer hopeful of Ghana’s governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has declared his intention to re-enter the race for the party’s presidential ticket—should nominations reopen.
The outspoken MP for Assin Central made the announcement following his decision to withdraw from the NPP’s ongoing nationwide ‘Thank You’ tour, citing threats to his team’s safety.
His decision comes in the wake of a violent incident in Kumasi, where a young supporter is alleged to have been stabbed during a confrontation at a gathering linked to the tour. The altercation reportedly involved attempts by unknown individuals to retrieve cash the victim had received from an ally of Mr Agyapong.
Police are investigating the matter, with spent bullet shells recovered from the scene, fuelling concerns over rising tension within the party’s ranks.
Mr Agyapong said his security team could no longer guarantee the safety of his entourage, prompting the withdrawal. He also claimed that members of his camp have faced harassment and misinformation campaigns aimed at undermining his political ambitions.
“From Berekum to Kumasi, the signs are clear—we are not needed. Let them continue on their own,” he stated during a media interaction, pointing to what he views as an increasingly hostile internal environment.
Despite the challenges, the NPP stalwart says his team remains focused and will regroup in due course. He affirmed that he remains committed to contesting again, asserting his role in building the party from its early days.
