IGP promotes 12,802 police officers, clears 5–10 year backlog

The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has promoted 12,802 police officers between January and the first week of February 2026, in what officials describe as an effort to clear a backlog of delayed promotions within the Ghana Police Service.

The promotions, which cover ranks from Lance Corporal to Chief Inspector, include cases that had been pending for between five and 10 years.

In a statement issued after media enquiries, the IGP’s Secretariat said the exercise was conducted in accordance with the Police Service Regulations, 2012 (Constitutional Instrument 76).

Under Regulation 37 of CI 76, promotions are based on a combination of promotion examinations, seniority, length of service, satisfactory performance and good conduct. The regulations also allow for special recommendations in cases involving acts of bravery, valour, crime prevention or outstanding performance of duty.

Earlier this week, some media outlets alleged that the promotion process had been affected by nepotism. The Secretariat rejected those claims, stating that the process involved submissions from unit, district, divisional and regional commanders across all 25 police regions.

It added that promotions within the Service are not determined solely by the IGP but are governed by the procedures set out in CI 76.

According to the Secretariat, about 11,900 officers in the lower ranks were promoted after exceeding the stipulated four-year period in rank, while approximately 600 promotions were granted on the basis of special recommendations.

The statement also said that several petitions had been reviewed as part of the exercise. These included cases involving officers who had been on interdiction for extended periods and were later acquitted, as well as corrections to promotion dates that had affected officers’ progression.

In addition, officers who died in the line of duty were promoted posthumously following representations from their families.
