The Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has deployed a special investigative team to assist in uncovering the circumstances surrounding the killing of the Kusasi chief in Asawase.
The Kusasi chief, Abdul-Malik Azenbe, who also held the title of Kaadi Divisional Area chief in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region, was shot and killed by unknown assailants in Asawase on Tuesday (22 July) in what officials believe was a targeted attack.
Addressing the bereaved family, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commander of Police Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, said investigations are well under way and that the police are determined to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“We have already launched investigations, and I assure you that we will hunt down the suspects,” DCOP Teye-Cudjoe said.
He added that all official protocols had been completed, and the chief’s body will now be released for burial.
The commander also urged the media to be measured in their reporting and give the family space to mourn.
Exhibits retrieved
According to a police statement, the assailants, each riding a separate motorbike, approached the victim at close range and opened fire before fleeing the scene in Asawase.
The victim was rushed to the Manhyia District Hospital and later transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The body has since been deposited at the Ebenezer Mortuary in Tafo for autopsy.
DCOP Teye-Cudjoe and the regional crime officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police Ebenezer Boyor, visited the scene with a team of officers.
During their inspection, two spent shells – believed to have been fired from an AK-47 assault rifle – were retrieved as evidence.
Public assistance
The police described the incident as a “heinous crime” and assured the public that every effort is being made to apprehend the suspects.
They urged residents of Asawase to remain calm and co-operate by sharing any relevant information.
Anyone with information is advised to contact the nearest police station or to call any of the emergency lines: 191, 18555 or 112.
