Identity fraud in West Africa dominated by Ghana and Nigeria

Smile ID's 2024 Report on Digital Identity Fraud in Africa shows that Ghana and Nigeria have the highest incidence of identity fraud.

Smile ID’s 2024 Report on Digital Identity Fraud in Africa shows that Ghana and Nigeria have the highest incidence of identity fraud.

Smile ID is a digital solution for identity verification, anti-fraud detection and money laundering prevention. It is a Know your Customer (KYC) compliance solution for businesses across Africa.

Because Nigeria has adopted more digital and biometric forms of identification, the fraud rate is higher in Ghana, according to the report.

In Ghana, the three most attacked documents across Africa are the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), the Passport and the Ghana Card.

According to the report, the SSNIT has the highest attempted fraud rate at 20%, followed by the Passport at 19%, and the Ghana Card at 16%.

Additionally, the report reveals that the most common type of document ID fraud is failed security checks, while the most common type of biometric fraud is spoofing.
