A delegation from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), led by its Deputy Director-General, Hua Liu, has paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to discuss plans for the establishment of a radiotherapy and nuclear medicine centre in Tamale.
The proposed facility aims to expand access to cancer treatment in northern Ghana and reduce the long distances patients currently travel to Kumasi and Accra for radiotherapy services.
During the meeting, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration in nuclear medicine, radiotherapy, and capacity building under the IAEA’s technical cooperation programme.
The Health Minister described the project as timely, noting that many cancer patients from the northern regions face financial and emotional challenges seeking treatment in other parts of the country. He said the ministry has yet to receive a bankable document for the project but assured that efforts are underway to mobilise the necessary support for its implementation.
Hua Liu commended Ghana’s longstanding partnership with the IAEA and recognised the country’s leadership in nuclear medicine education and training through the School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences.
He said Ghana’s progress in radiological science reflects the importance of sustained technical cooperation, adding that the IAEA remains committed to helping the country strengthen its radiotherapy infrastructure and human resource base.
