I will increase district assembly common fund to 7%, says Mahama

Mahama said he is committed to completing the decentralisation of all ministries, departments and agencies so that power will be handed over to the people at the local government level

Former president John Dramani Mahama has said his next government will ensure that the district assembly common fund disbursement will see an increase from 5% to 7%.

Mahama said he is committed to completing the decentralisation of all ministries, departments and agencies so that power will be handed over to the people at the local government level.

This, according to the former president, is the only way Ghana will achieve the decentralisation agenda.

“The district assembly common fund is going to be regular so that districts can take advantage of it and be able to increase the pace of their development, Mahama said.

Mahama was speaking to the media in Bole of the Savannah Region on Tuesday 19 December 2023, when he went to cast his vote at the just-ended district assembly and unit committee elections.

The former president, who has also been an assembly member before, indicated that assembly members carry a great deal of responsibility and that he will also make sure that they are entitled to allowances if he returns to power.

“We will pay them some allowance so that it helps them carry out the duties they have been elected for,” Mahama said.

Mahama also urged the electoral commission of Ghana to address all electoral challenges before the 2024 elections to avoid tensions on election day.
