Patricia Asiedua Koranteng, widely known as Nana Agradaa, has filed an appeal against her 15-year prison sentence for defrauding members of the public through a widely televised money-doubling scheme.
The former traditional priestess, who later became an evangelist, was convicted in Accra on 3 July and sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of using her television platform in 2022 to solicit large sums of money from viewers with promises of supernatural financial returns.
In her petition, Agradaa argues that the judgment was flawed, unreasonable and unsupported by the evidence presented in court. Her legal team is asking the appellate court to overturn both the conviction and the sentence.
The appeal challenges the fairness of the entire trial process. The documents accuse the trial judge of shifting the burden of proof on to the accused, in effect asking Agradaa to prove her innocence, despite what her lawyers describe as insufficient evidence from the prosecution.
Her lawyers also allege that the judge displayed personal bias throughout the proceedings.
They cite frequent confrontations with defence counsel in open court, claiming these actions amounted to harassment and intimidation, which denied Agradaa the right to adequate legal representation.
In addition, the appeal describes her 15-year sentence as excessively harsh, given the circumstances of the case, and calls for a more lenient approach.
