The Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has issued an unreserved apology following the chaotic scenes that unfolded earlier this year during the vetting of President John Mahama’s ministerial nominees.
Speaking on Atumpan on AsaasePa 107.3MHz on Monday (14 April), the Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri said the conduct during that session had upset many of his supporters and followers, acknowledging the public outcry that followed.
“I have a lot of followers and fans, and many of them were unhappy about what happened. We apologise unreservedly,” Mr. Annoh-Dompreh said.
While assuring Ghanaians of his side’s commitment to upholding the dignity of Parliament, he noted that if circumstances ever threaten that principle, they will not hesitate to take bold action to send a clear message to the public.
“In the worst-case scenario, we will pack out and make our message clear to Ghanaians about happenings. We won’t stage a walkout, but in situations which could amount to fisticuffs, we would work to prevent that,” he posited.
Background
Members of Parliament from both the NDC Majority and NPP Minority caucuses on the Appointments Committee engaged in heated exchanges and near fisticuffs after chaos erupted during the committee’s sitting in the late hours of Thursday, 30th January 2025.
The commotion stemmed from disagreements over the vetting process, with a refusal to proceed with the outstanding nominees—Kwabena Mintah Akandoh (Minister-designate for Health) and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (Minister-designate for Foreign Affairs).
The incident unfolded immediately after the vetting of Transport Minister-designate Joseph Bukari Nikpe, when NPP Minority MPs demanded an adjournment, citing exhaustion. However, the request was opposed by NDC Majority MPs, who insisted on proceeding. Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor urged the Clerk to Parliament to swear in the next nominee, leading to a tense standoff.
Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, addressing the disorder, made a passionate plea for calm while announcing a change in venue for the continuation of the process.
“Ghana has one of the most beautiful and functioning democracies. The Ghanaian Parliament remains the envy of many parliaments,” he said.
