Napo: I apologise – I never meant to disrespect our former presidents

Dr Opoku Prempeh (known as “Napo”) told a crowd on 9 July that President Nana Akufo-Addo is the best president Ghana has ever had since independence

The New Patriotic Party’s running mate for the 2024 general election, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as “Napo”, has apologised for making remarks comparing previous Ghanaian leaders unfavourably to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

On Tuesday (9 July), Dr Opoku Prempeh asserted that President Akufo-Addo is the best president Ghana has had since independence in 1957, leading to public outcry in some quarters.

However, in a statement dated 12 July 2024, Dr Opoku Prempeh clarified that he did not intend to denigrate Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah or any other former president or national leader.

“The statement reflects my personal opinion about President Akufo-Addo’s impact relative to other presidents we have had,” Napo said.

“I wish to emphasise that I never meant to disrespect our former president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, or any of our former heads of state, including my own grand-uncle and mentor, John Agyekum Kufuor,” he said.

“I note the concerns raised after my statement. I apologise sincerely and regret any discomfort caused,” he added.
