Hyundai to begin assembling cars in Ghana

Ghana is offering tax breaks to carmakers and has promised to restrict the influx of second-hand cars which account for 70% of vehicle imports

Hyundai Motors and Investments Ghana Limited has hinted of plans to begin assembling cars in Ghana in the coming months.

Ganesh Phadale, managing director of Hyundai Motors told www.asaaseradio.com in an exclusive interview.

“We also planning, we are in the process, we have discussed with management and with government also and are in the process and very soon you will hear from us “ he said.

Ganesh added “Right now, we have sent the application and we are in the process, we had a couple of meetings with them and we have a positive to government, when the application gets through then we know what to do

He said the firm is hoping to establish an assembling plant in Ghana to assemble new vehicles to compete on the Ghanaians’ market.

Ghana is hoping to become the automobile hub in the West Africa Region following the entrance of major automobile firms in the country.

So far, Nissan, Toyota, Suzuki , Renault Sinotruck are all in the process of establishing a manufacturing plant after signing a memorandum of understanding with government.

Already German automobile giant Volkswagen has begun assembling cars in Ghana after officially opening its plant in August.

Japanese car maker Nissan is expected to follow soon after announcing it is now ready to roll out the first locally assembled vehicle in

In May, Parliament banned the arrival of cars that are more than 10 years old in a bid to lure manufacturers.
