Human behaviour behind most road crashes in Ghana — MTTD

Human behaviour remains the leading cause of road crashes in Ghana, accounting for more than 90% of incidents recorded across the country, according to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.

Alexander Kweku Obeng, Director of Education, Research and Training at the MTTD, said speeding, dangerous overtaking and distracted driving continue to drive the majority of crashes.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show, Obeng described the situation as worrying, particularly given the rising number of road fatalities.

He revealed that Ghana recorded 14,743 road crashes in 2025, representing a 9.3% increase over the previous year.

The crashes involved 24,038 vehicles, an increase of 8.54%, while 2,949 people lost their lives, representing an 18.24% rise compared to earlier figures.

“We say one death is one too many because crashes are preventable,” Obeng said.

Data from January 2026 also showed troubling trends.

According to Obeng, 1,288 crashes were recorded in January alone, resulting in 283 deaths and 1,670 injuries.

Motorcycles accounted for a significant proportion of fatalities.

“Out of the 283 deaths recorded in January, 139 involved motorcycles,” he said.

Obeng attributed the high number of motorcycle-related deaths to reckless riding, lack of proper training and failure to wear protective helmets.

He said proposed amendments to Ghana’s road traffic regulations aim to strengthen safety rules for motorcycle riders.

These include raising the minimum age for commercial motorcycle operations and introducing mandatory training and licensing systems.

Obeng stressed that improving road safety will require stronger enforcement and greater responsibility from road users.

“About 92% of crashes are human-related, so behaviour change is critical if we want to reduce deaths on our roads,” he said.
