NPP flagbearer race: We’ll not hesitate to crack the whip, says Owusu-Agyemang

The NPP’s vetting committee last week ended its mandate after successfully vetting all ten aspirants who are hoping to lead the party in Election 2024

The chairman of the National Council of Elders of the governing New Patriotic Party, Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, says the party will not hesitate to crack the whip if anybody flouts the campaign rules for the NPP primaries.

The NPP’s vetting committee last week ended its mandate after successfully vetting all ten aspirants who are hoping to lead the party in the 2024 election.

Francis Addai-Nimoh, a former MP for Mampong, was the last to appear before the committee.

Nine other aspirants – including Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, the former trade and industry minister Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, the former energy minister Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko and the former NPP general secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong – appeared before the nine-member vetting committee, led by Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, a former Speaker of Parliament.

The five remaining aspirants are the MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, the economist Kofi Konadu Apraku, the former minister of food and agriculture Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the former attorney general and minister of railways development Joe Ghartey and Kojo Poku, an energy expert.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (20 July 2023). Owusu-Agyemang said: “We will crack the whip to ensure the proper thing is done.

“We have met all ten candidates individually and advised them to have a clean campaign and to also assure them of clean and fair election.”

Owusu-Agyemang added: “We’ll not accept a situation where the wrong thing is done. We belong to the same family.”
