Students of Ghana School of Law raise concerns over unconventional law of evidence paper

Over 1,400 students, including several repeat students from various years, exited the WAEC exams hall in Accra with considerable distress

Part one students offering the Professional Law Course (PLC) at the Ghana School of Law (GSL) have raised serious concerns about the unconventional nature of questions set by the Independent Examination Committee (IEC) of the General Legal Council (GLC) in the Law of Evidence paper they wrote on Friday, 13 June 2025.

Over one thousand four hundred students, including several repeat students from various years, who wrote the paper, exited the WAEC examination hall in Accra with considerable distress, discussing among themselves how complex and unconventional the Law of Evidence paper was structured compared to past questions over the last ten years.

Social Media comments

Some aggrieved students were heard stating that there appears to be a disconnect between the paper they wrote which was set by the Independent Examination Committee and the teaching at the Ghana School of Law.

On Social Media, some students also posted their comments to express their frustrations with the Law of Evidence paper and the way it was set.

“Naaa, I’ve never been left so heartbroken after a paper than today. If you see me, unless you pray for me,”a student wrote on X.

“I kept closing and checking the question paper to be sure it was law of evidence I was writing herh IEC 2:0” another comment on X read.

“GSL Part 1 students after they saw the law of evidence question paper. PS: It’s 6 questions (answer any 4) but you can’t do anything about questions 3 & 4 so essentially, you have 4 compulsory questions to answer. #IEC #GSL,” a legal practitioner posted on his X handle.

“What course did we write today,” a student asked on a WhatsApp page.

“They should not call it law evidence again. They should call it civil criminal ADR evidence,” another student posted.

“This is not only Bruce Lee, American and Indian actors have joined them,” the comment of another student read on a WhatsApp Platform.

“I just saw the Part 1 Law of Evidence paper. Herhhh. They’ve done it again. Hmmmmmm,” another social media comment read.

The paper and the exams

The 3-hour controversial Law of Evidence paper provided six (6) questions, and the students had to choose and answer four (4) of the questions. Thus, the students had 45 minutes to answer each question they settle on.

The records indicate that the Law of Evidence paper in the Professional Law Course is one of the papers that often records a lot of failings. Rumors have it that, over 300 candidates in last year’s Law of Evidence exams are said to have allegedly failed. They were among those who wrote the paper this year.

The professional law course examination started on Tuesday, 10 June 2025, and will end on Friday, 27 June 2025. Both part one and part two students, as well as post-call students, are sitting for the examination.

So far, Part One students have written two papers, Civil Procedure and Law of Evidence and they have four more papers to write.

Part Two students have written one paper, Conveyancing and Drafting with three more papers to write. Post-Call students have wrtitten three papers, Law of Evidence, Constitutional Law and Civil Procedure and they also have four more papers to write.

The GSL

The concerns of the students has necessicitated an internal statement from the Director of the Ghana School of Law, His Lordship, Justice Barima Nana Yaw Kodie Oppong.

In his Statement to the student body, He pointed out that the GSL appreciated the concerns raised by the students but urged them to forget about the challenge and concentrate on the remaining papers they have to write.

“We have received and noted your concerns on, inter alia, unconventional nature of some questions in the Law of Evidence exam written on Friday 13th June 2025.

“We appreciate the anxiety, frustration and uncertainty this has caused you, and we want you to know that your emotions are valid.

“Please remember that challenges, even unexpected ones test not only your knowledge but also your resilience and determination.

“We empathize deeply with your current state of mind and want to assure you of our unwavering support every step of the way,” Justice Barima Nana Yaw Kodie Oppong’s statement read.

“Now is the time to take a deep breath, let go of the worries, and focus on the bigger picture. Have faith in your efforts, trust in your preparation, and remain hopeful for success.

With perseverance and the grace of Almighty God, brighter days and rewarding outcomes lie ahead. Keep your spirits high and your hearts strong. We believe in you,” The statement by the Director of GSL further read.
