Update: Minority Leader secures release of NPP’s “Adenta Kumi” from NIB custody

Alfred Ababio Kumi, also known as Adenta Kumi with the Minority Leader in his office, has been charged with publication of false news by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), his lawyer has confirmed

Alfred Ababio Kumi, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist known as “Adenta Kumi”, has been released unconditionally after hours of detention by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

He was spotted at the NIB headquarters in Accra in the company of Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who is reported to have played a key role in securing his release.

Kumi was arrested earlier today over allegations of publishing false information in connection with a controversial petition involving Ghana’s Chief Justice and members of a Supreme Court investigative committee.

His lawyer, Clement Opoku Gyamfi, has confirmed that the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has charged him with publishing false news.

The NPP, Ghana’s main opposition party, has condemned the arrest, describing it as part of a wider campaign of intimidation against opposition figures by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

Gyamfi explained that his client was interrogated by NIB officials in his presence and that the charges relate to comments Kumi made during media interviews, on his X social media account, and in a petition, he submitted to the presidency.

The petition concerns the committee established to investigate the possible removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.

Kumi, a former NPP parliamentary aspirant for the Adentan constituency in the Greater Accra Region, alleges misconduct by members of the investigative committee.

He claims that the Supreme Court Justices Gabriel Scott Pwamang, Samuel Adibu-Asiedu and Yonny Kulendi met with Thaddeus Sory, legal counsel for one of the petitioners against the Chief Justice, Daniel Ofori, at Santoku Restaurant in the Airport Residential Area of Accra.
