Former prime minister of Mozambique Pascoal Manuel Mocumbi is dead

Prime Minister Mocumbi was the father of Kofi Mocumbi, his son by the popular late NPP politician Theresa Amerley Tagoe (“Iron Lady”)

Dr Pascoal Manuel Mocumbi, who was the prime minister of the Republic of Mozambique from 1994 to 2004 and previously served as minister of health (1980 to 1987) and minister of foreign affairs (1987 to 1994), has died.

Prime Minister Mocumbi was the father of Kofi Mocumbi, his son by Theresa Amerley Tagoe (“Iron Lady”), a well-known Ghanaian female politician, leading member of the New Patriotic Party and MP for Ablekuma South who pre-deceased him.

He was 81.

According to an official statement issued by the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Mozambique dated Saturday 25 March 2023, Dr Mocumbi died this morning in Maputo after a prolonged illness.

The statement further announced that there will be a state funeral for the late former prime minister and that Mozambique will observe of two days of national mourning in his honour.

“During the period of national mourning, the national flag and the presidential flag will be hoisted at half-mast throughout the national territory and in the diplomatic and consular missions of the Republic of Mozambique.

“In this moment of pain and consternation, the Council of Ministers regrets this irreparable loss for the family and for the country and presents its solidarity and deepest condolences to the bereaved family,” the statement said.

FRELIMO pioneer

Dr Mocumbi, who was a founding member of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO), was born on 10 April 1941 in the city then known as Lourenço Marques, now Maputo.

Dr Mocumbi served in the World Health Organization’s task force on health and development. In 2005, he was appointed as the WHO goodwill ambassador for maternal, new-born and child health care for Africa.

He also had an active role in other global health initiatives.

Mocumbi obtained his medical degree from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1973. After completing his studies, he returned to Mozambique where he practised medicine as obstetrician and gynaecologist in hospitals across the country before serving in political high office.
