Earth tremors: NADMO was inundated with panic calls, says official

Parts of Accra were on Monday hit by a 3.5 magnitude earth tremor affecting areas such as Santa Maria, Sowutuom, Adabraka, Gbawe, McCarthy Hill, Osu Ako Adjei and Mallam

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has said its offices were inundated with panic calls following Monday’s earth tremors in Accra.

Parts of Accra were hit by a 3.5 magnitude earth tremor affecting areas such as Santa Maria, Sowutuom, Adabraka, Gbawe, McCarthy Hill, Osu Ako Adjei and Mallam.

Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (13 December), the director-in-charge of geological disaster at NADMO Joseph Ankrah said no casualty was recorded after the incident.

“We were inundated with calls yesterday but those were more panic calls than anybody being in any real danger and we worked to calm people’s fears as to the nature of this particular tremor,” he said.

“I would like to categorically say that the earth tremor was not at a level that could endanger anybody or even property… It was not in the dangerous category.

“Whenever earth tremors occur, it is always best to lie under a bed or even a table… or something stable that can mitigate danger should something fall from overhead to endanger the person,” Ankrah added.

On Monday, three earth tremors were recorded in Ghana’s capital, Accra, officials of the Geological Survey Authority confirmed.

The epicenter was located in the western part of Accra, 10-km from Gbawe, reports the state-owned Daily Graphic
