Houses burnt in deadly clash in Nkwanta South, one hospitalised

Tensions boil over in Oti Region as violent tribal disputes force families to flee and leave schools shut

A fresh wave of communal violence in Nkwanta South, Oti Region, has left 43-year-old Naomi Foligah fighting for her life in hospital and two houses burnt to the ground.

The incident, which erupted on Wednesday night (15 January) in Tuobodom, a sub-community in the municipality, has reignited fears of instability and forced some residents to flee their homes.

Foligah, who sustained gunshot wounds while shielding her children from harm, recounted the harrowing ordeal from her hospital bed at St. Joseph Catholic Hospital.

The clash is the latest in a series of violent disputes that have plagued Nkwanta South in recent years, often rooted in unresolved tribal litigation.

The municipality has been under a dusk-to-dawn curfew since last year, a desperate attempt by authorities to curb the unrest.

However, the tension continues to simmer beneath the surface, disrupting daily life. Schools remain closed, government offices shuttered, and economic activities paralysed as fear grips the community.

While the exact cause of Wednesday’s violence remains unclear, security agencies, including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Armed Forces, and the Fire Service, were deployed to restore calm.

Despite their efforts, the flames had already consumed the targeted houses before they could be extinguished.

The Nkwanta Divisional Police Command has launched an investigation into the incident and is appealing to residents to maintain calm.

Communal clashes are not new to Nkwanta South. The area has recorded numerous fatalities in recent years, with tensions between factions often boiling over into violence.

Despite efforts by local leaders and security forces, a lasting resolution remains elusive.

For now, the community is left to grapple with the aftermath of the latest conflict, its scars visible in the charred remains of homes and the wounded residents seeking solace in hospital beds.
