A labour expert, Y B Amponsah has said Labour Unions in the country have no choice than to discontinue their intended strike slated from Monday (15 July) over the sale of 60% stake in some four hotels by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).
The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) last week halted plans to divest 60% of its stake in four hotels owned by the Trust.
The hotels are La Palm Beach Hotel, the Labadi Beach Hotel, the Royal Ridge Hotel and Elmina Beach Hotel.
The move comes barely 24 hours after labour unions declared their intention to embark on a nationwide strike over the sale of the hotels to the Rock City hotel group, owned by the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.
Rock City has since withdrawn its bid to acquire the stake in the four hotels owned by SSNIT.
Reacting to the development on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (15 July), Amponsah said “This decision to withdraw the process could have been taken about a month earlier, that’s the worry.”
“… I believe that the unions wouldn’t have any basis to continue with their strike, even if they have issues with the board of SSNIT, it is something that they have to table it and discuss it another time.”
Amponsah added, “They should now discontinue the strike and create a new engagement for the situaton to be addressed by the powers that be, I think they have a very good opportunity to re-engage SSNIT to do what is right.”
