Ho Teaching Hospital steps up drive to become Ghana’s premier medical tourism hub
Speaking at a strategic engagement session with hospital leadership and board members, chief executive Hintermann Mbroh said the hospital had already started its medical tourism journey before the current government included it in its national policy

Ho Teaching Hospital has reaffirmed its commitment to becoming Ghana’s leading destination for medical tourism, positioning itself as a centre of excellence for innovative healthcare.
Speaking at a strategic engagement session with hospital leadership and board members, chief executive Hintermann Mbroh said the hospital had already started its medical tourism journey before the current government included it in its national policy.
“We began this vision long before it became part of national policy. In fact, Ho Teaching Hospital was specifically mentioned in the governing party’s manifesto as a key facility for medical tourism,” he said. “Now that a national medical tourism policy has been adopted, we must realign our internal strategy to reflect national objectives.”
Mbroh stated that the hospital’s previous board had developed a strong roadmap to enhance services in line with this vision. The current focus, he said, is to harmonise that plan with the national strategy and lay the groundwork to make it a reality.
“This involves strengthening our internal systems, clearly defining responsibilities, and creating accountability structures that support the implementation of our vision,” he added.
A key priority, according to Mbroh, is improving the quality of patient care. While significant improvements have already been made, he emphasised the need to ensure these translate into a satisfying experience for all patients, including international visitors.
“We need to be clear on what makes our care exceptional, and we must invest smartly to address pressing needs such as increasing bed capacity, upgrading critical infrastructure like oxygen supply systems, generators, and other essential equipment,” he said.
Board chair Delanyo Tsidi Dorvlo stressed the importance of targeted investments to improve infrastructure and service delivery, noting that such improvements will support both the medical tourism agenda and overall patient care.
“The technical advisor to the Minister of Health has indicated that advancing the role of Ho Teaching Hospital in medical tourism is a critical national priority. As a board, we are committed to ensuring the hospital is equipped to play this role effectively,” he said.
He added that efforts are underway to identify and prioritise immediate investment areas that will deliver quick wins while setting the stage for long-term development.
With its strategic location, growing reputation, and national backing, Ho Teaching Hospital is well positioned to play a central role in Ghana’s emerging medical tourism sector. The leadership believes that by improving infrastructure, enhancing service quality, and embracing innovation, the hospital can attract patients from across the region and beyond—boosting healthcare outcomes and local economic growth.
