Chereponi conflict caused our defeat in 2020, says NDC parliamentary candidate hopeful

Kalanba expressed worry about the intermittent communal conflicts in Chereponi and its environs. He has assured the electorate that he will find a lasting solution to all conflict-related issues

A parliamentary candidate hopeful for the Chereponi Constituency in the North East Region, Yakubu Seidu Abubakari Kalanba, has blamed the “volatile nature” of the constituency as the major cause of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) loss in the 2020 general elections.

Kalanba expressed worry about the intermittent communal conflicts in Chereponi and its environs. He has assured the electorate that he will find a lasting solution to all conflict-related issues in the constituency when he is given the nod to serve as the member of parliament (MP).

He alleged that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is the cause of the conflicts in the area, adding that anytime the NPP is in power there are conflicts in the area which leads to loss of lives and property.

He stated that the NDC is the only party that can bring peace to the area. He spoke to Asaase News after he had been vetted in the North East Regional capital, Nalerigu. He said “the last elections [2020],  we lost it due to the conflict and the conflict is long gone.

The previous mistakes we made will not be repeated. Thankfully, this time round, it is going to be an Anufo against an Anufo and that tribal card will not come to play.

“Those who even voted for the current MP have realized that, in fact, it was a big mistake because the place has been more chaotic than ever before.

“What is needed in the Chereponi Constituency now is peace. It is tried and tested that anytime the NDC is in power, we enjoy relative peace in the constituency and it is that peace that I am going to bring back.”

Kalanba is one of the four other aspirants contesting the parliamentary seat in Chereponi. He is delighted to be the first candidate on the ballot paper. He hopes to win the primaries and run with John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 general elections.
