Egyapa Mercer: No dumsor, we’ve cleared debt owed WAPCo

According to the deputy energy minister, the government has so far cleared about $13 million out of the $19 million owed WAPCo

The government has cleared parts of the debt owed to the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo), the deputy minister of energy Andrew Egyapa Mercer has confirmed.

According to Egyapa Mercer, the government has so far cleared about US$13 million out of the US$19 million owed to WAPCo.

The indebtedness led to intermittent power outages in parts of the country following cuts in the supply of gas by WAPCo.

Speaking iwith Benjamin Offei-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (12 January), Egyapa Mercer said the government has reviewed the cash waterfall system to address the problem.

“… Thankfully on 10 December, the Ministry of Finance came through and we advanced US$10 million to WAPCo, so, that very evening, they restored their service.

“Moving forward, what we have sought to do is to move the gas transportation system from the cash waterfall mechanism from tier 2 to tier 1,” he said.
