Black Stars drop further down FIFA rankings after recent friendlies

The drop follows the Black Stars poor showings during their recent friendlies which saw Ghana suffer defeat at the hands of Nigeria and held to a scrappy draw with Uganda

Ghana’s national men’s football team, the Black Stars, have slumped one position further in the latest FIFA Men’s World Rankings, released on Thursday (4 April).

The team now sits in 68th place globally, continuing a worrying trend for the four-time African champions.

This decline began in February 2022, when Ghana dropped from 52nd to 61st. The ranking stagnated for nearly a year before another fall to 67th in February 2024, following a disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire.

The latest drop pushes the Black Stars down to 15th place on the African continent, overtaken by Cabo Verde, who remain at 65th in the world rankings.

Ghana’s recent form offers little respite. Their only outings before the ranking update were a narrow 2-1 defeat to rivals Nigeria and a 2-2 draw with Uganda, who hold steady at 92nd and 20th in the World and African rankings, respectively.

At the continental level, Morocco retains the top spot despite dropping one place to 13th globally. Senegal remains in 17th place globally and second place on the African continent, while Nigeria, despite falling two positions to 30th in the world rankings, clings on to third place in Africa.
