Showing graphic images of COVID-19 patients on TV will raise awareness, says Aning

Professor Kwesi Aning, a leading security expert, argues that broadcasts of the facts of what people with COVID-19 suffer will make Ghanaians far more alert

The security expert and head of the research department at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) in Accra, Professor Kwesi Aning, has suggested that showing graphic images of COVID-19 patients on television may force Ghanaians to take the disease seriously.

Speaking on Morning Starr on Thursday (11 June 2020), Professor Aning said that it seems Ghanaians have relaxed their safety measures and are going about their duties despite the increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases.

COVID-19 deaths in Ghana have risen to 66 from 58 since the last count on Tuesday 16 June 2020. In effect, eight patients have died in less than 24 hours.

Confirmed cases of the virus have increased to 12,590 from 12,193, and recoveries now stand at 4,410.

According to Professor Aning, urgent steps must be taken to curb the worrying increase in COVID-19 cases across the country, including enforcing the law on arresting people flouting the directive on face masks.

“If we add the law [and] graphic imagery of what the ventilator does to you and how you’ll feel when you’re on are on it, people will start protecting themselves,” Aning told the host of the Morning Starr, Francis Abban.

President must “abandon COVID-19 team”

Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament has warned that Ghana’s health system will soon collapse because of the overwhelming cases of COVID-19.

In an interview with Starr News, a medical doctor and Minority member of Parliament’s health committee, Sebastian Sandaare (MP for Daffiama-Bussie-Issa), accused the government of gagging technical staff on the front line from speaking freely about the precarious situation in which the nation finds itself.

Dr Sandaare charged the president to abandon his COVID-19 team as a matter of urgency. He argues that it is partisan. He urged the president to assemble another team, of a national character, to assist in rescuing Ghana from the crisis.
