Ridge Hospital suspends two employees for allegedly selling PPE

Officials at Ridge Hospital say they will not spare any employees who violate rules and regulations governing the medical facility

The Ridge Hospital in Accra has suspended two of its staff for engaging in what it claims are administrative malpractices.

The suspended staff are Thomas Osei, a medicine counter assistant, and Divine Kumordzi of the hospital’s sewing unit.

A statement from Ridge Hospital said the two officers were captured by the BBC’s Africa Eye investigative team as they sold personal protective equipment (PPE) belonging to a private individual on the premises of the hospital.

The resulting Africa Eye documentary is yet to be aired.

The stolen PPE belongs to a private individual within the premises of the Hospital, the statement added.

Unacceptable acts

Ridge Hospital said such selfish acts by staff are unacceptable.

“The Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Ridge has suspended two of its staff for engaging in administrative malpractices which have tendencies of tarnishing [sic] the image of the hospital.

“These officers were caught by BBC investigative team ‘Africa Eye’ selling personal protective equipment (PPE) belonging to a private individual within the premises of the hospital.

Even though these items do not belong to the hospital and do not [figure in] the hospital’s COVID-19 stock, either donated or procured, their action constitutes a breach of the Ghana Health Service Code of Conduct,” the statement said.

Refund of monies

The management of the hospital also said that the suspects, Thomas Osei and Divine Kumordzi, have been suspended for two weeks without salary.

Kumordzi has also been directed to refund “all monies realised with regard to the unauthorised and inappropriate sale of face masks on the hospital premises”.

“Management stopped the practice immediately it came to its attention and ordered auditing of the stock of PPEs before arriving at its conclusion. The prescribed sanction is in line with the provisions of the Ghana Health Service codes of conduct and disciplinary procedures.”
