President Akufo-Addo to address the nation on COVID-19 battle tonight  

The president will address the nation at 8pm to update Ghanaians on the state of affairs with the country’s fight against COVID-19

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to address the nation this evening at 8pm to update the Ghanaian people on the state of affairs regarding the country’s fight against the novel coronavirus, COVID-19.

This will be President Akufo-Addo’s 14th address to the nation since the first two cases were recorded in Ghana last March and his first speech on the subject this month, July 2020. The last time he addressed the country on the pandemic was on 28 June 2020.

It is anticipated that President Akufo-Addo will outline measures on the reopening of the country’s land, sea and air borders in his speech tonight.

Ghana’s borders were closed on Sunday 22 March 2020, in an effort to help stop the importation and further spread of COVID-19.

In addition, the president is expected to review restrictions on large gatherings such as political rallies and church services.

According the Ghana Health Service COVID-19 website, the number of active cases in Ghana as of today, 26 July 2020, is 3,349. Twenty-eight thousand, nine hundred and twenty-seven people have recovered since contracting the COVID-19 infection.

Overall, 32,437 people have caught the virus in Ghana and 161 individuals have died as a result.

The Johns Hopkins University website tracking COVID-19 cases worldwide puts global confirmed cases at 16,076,713 and global deaths at 645,192 as at 12 noon on 26 July 2020.
