The Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, is responding to treatment after contracting the novel coronavirus.

In a Facebook post Agyeman-Manu expressed his gratitude to Ghanaians for their good wishes.

Ghanaians have been wishing the minister a speedy recovery since Saturday, after Citi News reported the minister’s COVID-19 status.

“I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the president and all Ghanaians for your well wishes and prayers. By the grace of God, I’m responding to treatment,” he wrote on his Facebook wall.

Agyeman-Manu is receiving treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Centre after he became infected with COVID-19.

Urging caution

The Health Minister, who announced Ghana’s first two cases of COVID-19 in a night-time broadcast on Thursday 12 March 2020, is the first high-profile government official to have confirmed positive for the novel coronavirus in Ghana.

Agyeman-Manu is known for urging the public to be cautious of the virus during his frequent appearances at the Information Ministry’s biweekly press briefings on COVID-19, which have been put on hold for some time.

In his eleventh address to the nation on the government’s fight against the coronavirus disease in Ghana President Akufo-Addo wished Agyeman-Manu a speedy recovery from COVID-19.

“Let us wish our hard-working Minister for Health, Honourable Kwaku Agyeman Manu, MP for Dormaa Central, a speedy recovery from the virus, which he contracted in the line of duty, and [who] is in a stable condition,” the president said.

Ghana’s current COVID-19 case count stands at 11,964, with 4,258 recoveries and 54 deaths.
