WACAM to government: Encourage responsible mining

President Akufo-Addo has assured stakeholders in the small scale mining sector that his government is committed to ensuring clean mining in Ghana

The Wassa Association of Communities Affected by Mining (WACAM) wants the government to adopt a comprehensive approach in dealing with the fight against illegal mining in Ghana.

President Akufo-Addo has assured stakeholders in the small scale mining sector that his government is committed to ensuring clean mining in Ghana.

Speaking with Asaase News, the technical director of WACAM, Kwaku Afari urged the government to ensure sustainability in its intended vision to eliminate illegal practices at the mining sites.

“We all do recognise that there is the need for the government to take very secure measures to make sure we address the issue, but we do believe that a lot more need to go into this and use a very holistic approach for it,” Afari said.

The CEO of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), Ing. Ebenezer Kofi Essienyi speaking at a press briefing on Monday (6 June) said encroachment and illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, are the two major challenges affecting their work.

“Another major concern to us is galamsey. People go all the way chasing the resources they want forgetting the risk associated with the towers falling. Meanwhile, the towers there are for our collective good.”
