GHS: Measures to contain COVID-19 during Easter successful

The director-general of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) is attributing the low cases recorded during the Easter festivities to measures put in place to contain the viral disease

Story Highlights
  • "One can say that any spike that happens after now we cannot blame it on Easter, which means the Easter system that was put in place has actually worked, because the two weeks has passed but we need to protect ourselves and that tells you how important adhering to discipline in all these festivities is very important to avert any spread of the disease.”

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has described measures put in place during the Easter period to contain the spread of COVID-19 as largely successful.

Addressing the media in Accra, the Director-General of the GHS, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, said despite the feat, Ghanaians must not let their guards down.

“Around Easter, we had a few issues but that is not to say that we are out of the woods. We still have significant threats, especially with the third wave in Europe, the rising case in India, Brazil among others,” Kuma-Aboagye said.

He added: “These still pose a threat to our cases. So we need to work very hard to prevent them and that is why the work at the airport remains significant, especially with the advent of new variant which we may not know how Ghanaians will handle that. So, the positivity rate at the airport has significantly reduced.”

Dr Kuma-Aboagye wants Ghanaians to continue to strictly adhere to the COVID 19 protocols to help avert any third wave in the country.

“One can say that any spike that happens after now we cannot blame it on Easter, which means the Easter system that was put in place has actually worked, because the two weeks has passed but we need to protect ourselves and that tells you how important adhering to discipline in all these festivities is very important to avert any spread of the disease.”

Measures

Henry Quartey, the Greater Accra Regional minister prior to Easter ordered for the closure of all beaches ahead of the Easter festivities until further notice.

The move was in line with efforts to avert flouting of the COVID-19 protocols and also contain the spread of the viral disease during the Easter festivities.

He therefore called on the MMDAs to ensure persons who violate the directives are arrested and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.
