GACL MD: We’re not allowing COVID-19-positive travellers into Ghana

The MD of Ghana Airports Company, Yaw Kwakwa, denies allegations that staff have relaxed COVID-19 test proof for travellers at Kotoka Airport

The managing director of Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) Yaw Kwakwa has denied claims that some travellers are allowed to pass through Kotoka International Airport without checking their COVID-19 test pass.

Speaking to Asaase News, Kwakwa said the system that staff have put in place at the airport makes it difficult for anyone to bypass it.

“When you get to where you exit, you realise that we have two levels of security that make sure that your test results actually stay negative and also make sure the bearer of the result is the person. Because they check the passport and they check the results, because the passport number is on the result,” he said.

Kwakwa added: “This is why when people say that somebody has come here and the person has exited by a connection man, it is very difficult. Mind you, if you tested positive, the standard thing is that you will be pulled back. So when you get to the exit there are security people here who will make sure you have tested negative before you are allowed to go.”

According to him, the rigid and robust systems at the airport give no room for unscrupulous individuals to pass through the airport without testing negative for COVID-19.

“Have you seen how separate the systems are? Can you imagine someone having a connection here to be able to take somebody from the top and the fellow goes up without doing the test? There are two levels here but you cannot see,” he said.
