Eight million NHIS users inactive, says CEO Dsane-Selby

The Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority, Dr. Lydia Dsane-Selby, says out of the 23 million subscribers, close to half are dormant

About eight million subscribers of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) are currently inactive, Dr. Lydia Dsane-Selby, the Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority, has announced.

Currently, about 23 million individuals have subscribed to the scheme, she said.

Speaking in an interview with host of Asaase Breakfast Show, Kojo Mensah, on Tuesday, the NHIA boss urged defaulters to take advantage of the waiver on the waiting period for defaulters to renew their membership to gain instant access to the scheme.

“The Vice President [Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia] has currently waived the waiting period that usually comes with defaulters or new registration, so everybody should take advantage for this week, irrespective of how old your NHIS membership is, try to renew your membership and you will have instant access,” she said.

She added: “About 12.5 million people are active, but the other about eight million people can use this week to get themselves back on the National Health Insurance Scheme. Even if you are NHIS membership defaulter, you can still link the two numbers and use your Ghana Card to renew your membership through the mobile phone.”

Ghana Card integration

Meanwhile, the NHIA on Monday announced that it is linking the scheme’s card to the National Identification Authority’s database to allow Ghana Card holders access affordable healthcare services.

This means, Ghana Card holders can now use their cards to access health services at all NHIS accredited service providers across the country.

The initiative forms part of government’s policy direction to make the Ghana Card a standard card for accessing public services.

Government is hopeful the move would also help speed up the country’s quest to attaining the universal health coverage ahead of the 2030 target.
