COVID-19 treatment centres tasked to ensure efficient distribution of PPE

The chair of the COVID-19 National Trust Fund, Sophia Akuffo, charges health facilities treating COVID-19 cases to ensure judicious use of donated PPE

The chair of the COVID-19 National Trust Fund, Chief Justice (rtd) Sophia A B Akuffo, has charged health facilities treating COVID-19 cases to ensure judicious use and distribution of the GHC10 million worth of personal protective equipment (PPE) donated by the fund to their facilities across the country.

A ceremony took place today (16 July 2020) on the forecourt of the State Banquet Hall in Osu, Accra at which the PPE was presented to beneficiary institutions in the Greater Accra, Eastern, Volta and Oti Regions.

Addressing guests, the former chief justice urged the health institutions not to allow internal bureaucratic processes to frustrate the distribution of the PPE to front-line health workers who are taking the risk of leading the fight against the spread of the novel coronavirus disease.

Expenditure so far

According to the chair of the COVID-19 National Trust Fund, the establishment has spent about GHC32,581,233.90, out of a total GHC 53,911,294.87 it has received so far by way of donations.

Request for donated

In her address, Chief Justice (rtd) Sophia Akuffo made a passionate appeal to the general public and to corporate Ghana to keep their donations coming.

This will ensure that the trust fund can continue to deliver on its mandate as encapsulated in Act 1012. The Trust Fund’s task essentially is to support needy and vulnerable people and institutions in Ghana that have been affected by the COVID-19 outbreak.

Item given

Items donated by the Trust Fund to a range of health facilities include infra-red thermometer guns, scrub suits, head coverings, coveralls of all sizes, heavy-duty aprons and disposable aprons.

The facilities also received utility gloves, examination gloves, sterile gloves, gynaecological gloves, N95 face masks, surgical face masks and goggles, among many other practical items.

Beneficiary institutions

The beneficiary institutions that received the personal protective equipment are the Greater Accra Regional Hospital at Ridge, Tema General Hospital, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, University of Ghana Medical Centre, Military Hospital, Ga East Municipal Hospital and the Police Hospital. These institutions made up the delegation from Greater Accra.

From the Eastern Region, the Regional Hospital in Koforidua also received PPE for its operations.

The Hohoe Municipal and Ho Teaching Hospitals in the Volta Region and Nkwanta District Hospital in Oti also received some of the PPE.
