Nurses and midwives call off “illegal” strike

The general secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association had signalled to Asaase Radio that members were likely to suspend industrial action

Members of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) have called off their strike action demanding better conditions of service.

The general secretary of the association, David Tenkorang-Twum, had dropped hints on The Asaase Breakfast Show (ABS) this morning (Wednesday 23 September) that the GRNMA might be prepared to call of its action after being served with a new injunction by the National Labour Commission (NLC).

Tenkorang-Twum was speaking with the host of the ABS Kojo Mensah.

“We shouldn’t have gotten where we are today,” he said. “We saw how the hospitals were deserted on the first day of the strike and it was quite disturbing during the second day.

“We have heard the cry of Ghanaians. As I said last time [I appeared on the ABS], we are not against the people of this country [because] they deserve better,” he told Kojo Mensah.

Resolve disagreements

The decision followed a meeting this afternoon with the NLC in an attempt to resolve the impasse, following the new injunction.

“Once they have gone back to the court for substituted services, which they have duly served on us, as law-abiding citizens we cannot defy the express orders of the high court,” Tenkorang-Twum told the ABS.

However, the GRNMA general secretary cautioned officials and individuals purported to be working for the government to desist from querying the association’s members for embarking on the strike.

Hundreds of patients were left stranded across public health facilities on Monday after members of the GRNMA disregarded a court injunction against their strike obtained by the NLC.

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association has roughly 90,000 members across the country, comprising nurses, midwives, physician assistants and registered anaesthetists working in public health facilities nationwide.
