Asaase Radio unveils breast cancer awareness campaign

Help cut your risk of breast cancer by letting your partner examine your breasts, says Dr Beatrice Wiafe Addai

A health expert has advised men to cultivate the habit of examining their wives’ breasts in order to help in the early detection of breast cancer.

The president of Breast Care International, Beatrice Wiafe Addai, who offered this advice, believes it will help to reduce breast cancer, which is said to be killing more women than any other cancer globally.

Dr Wiafe Addai was speaking at the official launch of Asaase Pink Care, an initiative by Asaase Radio to create awareness of breast cancer this month.

Home matches are on

“From now onwards, we want every woman to know how her breast feels like, how it looks like – are they lumpy, are they soft, et cetera. And whatever mode your breast is, they can be diseased. So let us know them,” she said.

“And if you are married, let your partner know your breast. Unfortunately, a lot of men are going outside to feel other people’s breasts. We are advising them to come back home to touch the ones in the home. Play home, not away.”

Dr Wiafe Addai commended Asaase Radio for taking the bold initiative to create awareness of breast cancer throughout the month of October.

“We have had a 13-year-old who lost both breasts and we are trying to raise funds for her to have cosmetic breasts. Now it affects people as young as 13, 14, 18, 24 and women as old as 100, so it doesn’t matter your age,” she said.

All kinds of us

Naomi Nelson-Barnes, head of marketing, communications, events and promotions at Asaase Radio, said the maiden Asaase Breast Care campaign will focus on the youth.

“We have a lot of things lined up internally and externally, and this is all in a bid to raise awareness about breast cancer among the younger population.

“Back in the day, we used to think if you mentioned breast cancer then it was only older women. I am sorry: it is not happening like that any longer. There is a lot out there that people need to know that they don’t know.

“At Asaase what we have is a mouthpiece and we are going to use it a lot to create awareness,” she said.

Various activities have been lined up to mark the first Asaase Radio Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

These include on-air events, outdoor and internal events for Asaase Radio staff, a yet-to-be-announced all-women hangout, aerobic sessions, fundraising and fun quizzes.
