Health infrastructure: Akufo-Addo has not neglected Ashanti Region, says Okoe Boye

The Health Minister emphasised the government's commitment to ensuring that all Ghanaians have access to quality healthcare without financial constraints

The Health Minister, Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, has refuted claims that the Ashanti Region has been neglected by the government in terms of health infrastructure and projects.

Speaking during his visit to the Suame Hospital, which is currently under construction, Dr Okoe Boye emphasised the Akufo-Addo government’s commitment to ensuring that all Ghanaians have access to quality healthcare without financial constraints.

There are growing concerns that the Ashanti Region, known for its strong support for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been overlooked. The Health Minister however stressed that the government’s priority is to complete all ongoing health projects in the region and initiate new ones under the ‘Agenda 111’ initiative.

“This is interesting especially when I hear some people create the impression that the Ashanti Region which has a lot of love for this government has been abandoned when it comes to facilities and projects, the minister remarked.

“Every Ghanaian, at least 70% of the population, at the point where they shouldn’t travel to receive healthcare without financial constraints being a barrier. This government will work hard to make sure that we complete all health projects that are on stream and follow through with those that have been earmarked, especially those in Agenda 111,” he said.

The Suame Community Hospital is among 12 other health facilities under construction with €71.5 million in funding secured from Erste Group Bank AG and Česká Spořitelna a.s.

The hospitals, currently under construction by VAMED Engineering GmbH of Austria, a global leader in the construction of healthcare facilities, are at various stages of completion. The 40-bed hospitals will have associated staff accommodation facilities for hospital workers, across the country.

It is expected that the contractor will hand over the Suame Community Hospital by the end of September.
