Office of Special Prosecutor was not set up to fail, says Kweku Baako

Seasoned journalist, Kweku Baako Jnr, says the Akufo-Addo administration values the Office of the Special Prosecutor in the fight against corruption

The Editor-in-Chief at large of the New Crusading Guide, Kweku Baako Jnr, has dispelled assertions that the Office of the Special Prosecutor was set up to fail by the Akufo-Addo-led administration.

He was reacting to claims from some quarters, suggesting the Office was set up to fail from the onset following the appointment of Martin Amidu as Ghana’s first Special Prosecutor.

“I don’t agree, it wasn’t set up to fail,” Baako Jnr said, adding: “First of all it was a party manifesto pledge, I believe they meant business when they were making that pledge, and the actualisation of it is indicative of the fact that they meant business. So, they just won’t go and play around public resources and people’s expectations and sentiments.”

He added: “What happened in Parliament was also indicative that they meant business, they took it through the legislative process and there was a bipartisanship that drove the process, that is serious business, and then of course the public did a lot of debate, and the international community also hailed it.”

Effect on election

Baako Jnr, however, said the resignation of the Special Prosecutor may not affect the chances of the New Patriotic Party in the run-up to the 7 December polls.

“This thing is restricted to the middle-class category and fortunately they are discerning and can analyse the issues. Martin has put out his case, government has also put out counter case.

“Those who are discerning will not follow the noise… they will interrogate and analyse the issues and come to a conclusion, but close examination of the issue will tell you government position is more convincing and persuasive,” he noted.

Prof Kwaku Agyeman-Budu, Head of Law Centre at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) Faculty of Law, also said the resignation of the special prosecutor will not necessarily impact the upcoming election.

“We have a much clearer picture than when the resignation letter came, and all the allegations of interference…. people are discerning and they will make an informed decision based on all that has happened,” he said.
