Gender Minister supports 1,000 widows in Walewale

Lariba Abudu Zuwera said she will support an additional 1,000 widows across the municipality

Lariba Abudu Zuwera, Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection and the Member of Parliament for Walewale has supported 1,000 widows in the West Mamprusi municipality of the North East Region.

She donated a 5k bag rice, GHC50.00, tomato paste, fry toil, and one cloth to each widow.

Lariba said the move is to ensure that widows in the municipality and other areas who have been struggling are given support to take care of their children.

The minister said she will support additional 1,000 widows across the municipality on zonal bases.

In 2021, the minister supported 600 widows in her constituency with money and other items to make living conditions better for them.

Speaking in an interview with Asaase News, Lariba said she will continue to support the widows and other vulnerable people in the constituency.

“I realized that they were so happy, they were smiling. Somebody told me that Hajia, me and my children are going to eat our favourite soup today because I have GHC50.00.

“And somebody said look, last year up to date, I haven’t taken rice so today what you have given me, I am going to cook rice. It was heartbreaking; that is why I beefed up the number to 2000 instead of the 600 last year. I will support another one thousand widows across all the zones in the constituency,” the Gender Minister said.

“Kayaye”

The minister speaking on the issue of Kayaye said she will work together with all stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the problem especially children of school-going age who are head porters.

“Kayaye is a very critical and very sad situation because I am a Northerner and most of them are Northern girls and my problem is those that are school-going age, they should be in school and not being Kayayes. I will engage stakeholders to see what we can do about the issue of Kayaye,” she said.
