Mahama will not respond to Amidu’s outburst, says Amaliba

A member of the legal team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, says Martin Amidu's invitation to Mahama is politically motivated

Abraham Amaliba, a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team, has insisted that former President John Mahama will not honour an open invitation of the special prosecutor for interrogation, in connection with the Airbus scandal.

He said the move by Martin Amidu is politically motivated hence the decision to decline it.

“Martin Amidu seems to be engaging in a fishing expedition, but I think that it is unfortunate that he has turned his office into a political office. There are a lot of political undertones in that letter, he did a similar thing in 2016 when he campaigned for Nana Akufo-Addo. He thinks that the time is ripe to do a similar thing,” Amaliba said.

Asked whether the former president will honour the invitation by the special prosecutor, Amaliba told Accra-based Joy FM on Tuesday, “I am saying that former President Mahama is focused on his campaign, former President Mahama does not intend responding to Martin Amidu’s outburst.”

Amidu on Monday dared Mahama to man-up and come to his office to prove his innocence in the Airbus bribery scandal.

“Your Excellency, the wise and the brave former President John Mahama, man-up, wise-up, and be brave enough to come with two lawyers of your own choice to be cautioned and interrogated by this Office to demonstrate your valour and wisdom as not being elected Government Official 1 and also as not being the first guarantor to Samuel Adam Mahama’s passport application,” Amidu said in a statement issued on Monday, 9 November 2020.

This comes barely a week after Mahama recently described the special prosecutor’s conclusion that he is elected Government Official 1 in the Airbus scandal as sheer “stupidity”.

“In the Agyapa report, you know that it is going to be damning of this government and so you go and put one paragraph there about airbus. Nobody asked you about Airbus.

“If you were man enough present Agyapa and do a report on Airbus separately and then I will come and answer you on Airbus. If you think I am indicted on Airbus accuse me directly .

“But because he is a coward and they knew Agyapa was going to be discussed today, so he put a paragraph on Airbus to equalize the discussion. What stupidity is this?”
