Residents in Mepe, the most affected community in the North Tongu district in the Volta Region following the Akosompo and Kpong dams spillage will no longer struggle to have access to primary healthcare services.
A newly state-of-the-art health centre was built and commissioned in the community, to give relief to the locals.
Health experts warned that the affected communities were exposed to numerous health problems following the disaster in October last year.
However, this informed the Ghana Chamber of Mines in collaboration with Citi FM/TV Foundation to build the facility for the people.
The Community Health-based Planning Services (CHPS) compound in Mepe was submerged in the flood waters.
The residents say the new facility has come at the right time because they are forced to travel to Battor Catholic Hospital for health services.
At the commissioning ceremony in Mepe, the president of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Joshua Mortorti noted that his outfit has spent GCH1.5 million in building the health facility.
The facility comes with male and female wards, an outpatient department (OPD), a laboratory, maternity and delivery rooms, diagnosis rooms, sanitary rooms and a staff bungalow.
He said the Chamber has also allocated a sum of GHC400,000 for the construction of a 10-unit toilet facility for the community.
Management of Citi FM/TV Foundation presented assorted food items to the community during the ceremony. They thanked their listeners and viewers who supported the course.
On his part, Togbe Kosi Nego VI, Mankrado of Mepe thanked the Ghana Chamber of Mines and Citi Fm/TV Foundation for the kind gesture. He promised to ensure a good maintenance culture in the facility.
Volta regional director of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Chrysantus Kubio also thanked the donors for helping the community. He promised to ensure that physician assistants are posted to the facility.
He also appealed to benevolent Ghanaians and organisations to help the facility with medical equipment.
Member of Parliament for the area, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the health centre will significantly boost healthcare delivery and alleviate the plight of the people of Mepe.
He appreciated the donors and promised to help resource and sustain the health centre.
