Fire consumes Odawna Market

Close to 90 stalls have been razed down by the fire at the Odawna Market in Accra, according to an eyewitness

Firefighters worked through the wee hours of Wednesday in a bid to stop a huge blaze that destroyed the Odawna Market near the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange in the capital, Accra.

The fire destroyed several shops, mostly wooden structures, and other properties, eyewitnesses told Asaase Radio.

Officials of the Ghana National Fire Service are yet to establish the actual cause of the fire, which was still raging early Wednesday morning.

“We are still struggling to salvage a few properties left. All our savings are gone and we don’t have anything on us now,” a trader told Asaase Radio’s Eugenia Richman on Wednesday from the scene.

Close to 90 stalls have been razed down by the fire, another eyewitness said.

Market fires are rife in Ghana, especially in the nation’s capital and Kumasi, the country’s second-largest city.

Though the cause of these fires is not known immediately, many have blamed poor electrical circuit installations as the major cause of these fires.
