Fasting at Wesley Girls’ SHS: Exercise greatest restraint and circumspection, says NPC

The National Peace Council says it is initiating an intervention plan to find an amicable solution to the recent events at the Wesley Girls’ High School

The National Peace Council (NPC) has called on Ghanaians, particularly, those affected by recent events at the Wesley Girls’ Senior High School to exercise “the greatest restraint and circumspection in their comments and pronouncements on the matter.”

In a statement, the NPC said it is initiating an intervention plan to find an amicable solution to the recent events at the Wesley Girls’ High School.

The NPC’s comment comes on the back of the reply of the Methodist Church rejecting the Ghana Education Service (GES’s) directive to Wesley Girl’s High School to allow Muslim students to observe the Ramadan fast.

“The Council acknowledges and reaffirms the initiatives already underway by the religious leaders to resolve the matter and encourages the leadership of the Christian and the Muslim communities to call on their followers to remain calm as efforts to build on the time-tested peaceful co-existence among Christians and Muslims are made by the relevant authorities,” the statement said.

Over the weekend, the GES said all schools in the country should not deny students the right to fast after Wesley Girls’ SHS banned students from fasting.

Reacting to the directive, the Methodist Church, which operates Wesley Girls said:  “The school rule in question is a long-standing one that is also non-religious and various renowned Muslim ladies in Ghana have passed through the school adhering to such a rule. The policies of the School over the 186 years of its existence have resulted in Wesley Girls High School being the school of Choice, Excellence and Achievement and the Church remain in full support of these policies.

“The Methodist Church Ghana cannot accede to the unilateral directive issued by the Ghana Education Service and insists that the Ghana Education Service respects the long-standing partnership between the government and the mission schools”.
